iPads and some Android tablets support eSIM, making them ideal for staying connected abroad without tethering to your phone. Whether you use a tablet for work, reading, or navigation, a dedicated eSIM means it has its own independent data connection. This guide covers compatibility, setup, and whether a tablet eSIM is worth the extra cost.
Compatible tablets
iPad: All iPad Pro models (2018+), iPad Air (3rd gen+), iPad (7th gen+), and iPad mini (5th gen+) with WiFi + Cellular support eSIM. WiFi-only iPads do not have cellular modems and cannot use eSIM. Check the back of your iPad — if it has an antenna line at the top (a thin plastic strip), it has cellular capability. Android tablets: Very few Android tablets support eSIM. Samsung Galaxy Tab S series (S8+, S9+) with 5G models do. Most other Android tablets are WiFi-only.
Why use eSIM on a tablet?
Independent connectivity. Your tablet works without your phone — useful if your phone battery dies, if you leave your phone at the hotel safe, or if you prefer navigating with a larger screen. Better for work. Remote workers who use iPad as a secondary screen or for email get a dedicated connection without hotspot battery drain. Navigation. An iPad mounted in a rental car provides better GPS navigation than a phone screen. Kids and family. Give children a tablet with its own eSIM for entertainment and communication without handing over your phone.
Setup on iPad
Settings → Cellular Data → Add eSIM → scan QR code from your provider. The process is identical to iPhone. Your iPad can hold multiple eSIM profiles and switch between them. All four of our recommended providers (Airalo, Yesim, Saily, Drimsim) work on iPads.
Should you get a separate plan for your tablet?
Not always. If your phone has an eSIM with hotspot/tethering included (all four of our recommended providers include this), you can share your phone's connection with your tablet via WiFi hotspot. This is free and works well for casual tablet use. Consider a separate tablet eSIM only if you need independent connectivity (phone at hotel, tablet with you) or if hotspot battery drain is a concern on long days out.

Same eSIM providers work on phones and tablets.
