How to Delete or Remove an eSIM from Your Phone

Deleting an eSIM profile from your phone is simple, but doing it at the wrong time can leave you without data mid-trip. This guide covers when and how to safely remove a travel eSIM, what happens to your data when you delete, and how to manage multiple eSIM profiles.

When to delete a travel eSIM

After your trip, when back on your home network. Do not delete your travel eSIM while still abroad. Even if you think your trip is over, delays, layovers, and unexpected stops mean you might need data. Wait until you are home, connected to your home carrier, and confirmed that your home SIM is working normally.

When the plan has fully expired. If your plan has unused data, keep it installed until the validity period ends. Once expired, the profile is just taking up a slot — safe to delete. When you need to free an eSIM slot. Older phones store a limited number of eSIM profiles (typically 5–8). If you travel frequently and accumulate expired profiles, delete old ones to make room.

How to delete on iPhone

Settings → Cellular → select the travel eSIM → Remove Cellular Plan → confirm. The profile is permanently deleted. On iOS 17+, there is an option to "Remove eSIM" which gives a confirmation dialog. Read it carefully — once removed, the QR code typically cannot be reused.

How to delete on Android

Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → select the travel eSIM → Delete SIM (or Remove). On Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → select eSIM → Remove.

What happens when you delete

The eSIM profile is erased from your phone's secure element. Your carrier credentials, network configuration, and remaining data balance are gone. Your provider's records still show your purchase — but reinstallation typically requires a new QR code. Some providers (notably Airalo) allow re-downloading the same plan from their app if you accidentally delete. Check with your provider before deleting if you have remaining data.

Should you delete or just disable?

You do not have to delete an eSIM to stop using it. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → travel eSIM → toggle off "Turn On This Line." On Android: SIM settings → disable the eSIM. The profile stays installed but inactive — no data usage, no charges. This is the safer option if you might return to that destination.
